Getting to and from school safely
As a parent or carer, it’s your responsibility to get your child to and from school safely. Student safety is our priority.
Keep our school community safe by:
- driving and parking safely, even if it means parking further away and walking the rest of the way to school
- being a good role model
- never calling your child from across the road
- using the safest place to cross the road.
For parents and carers of younger children
Discuss with your child how to be safe when:
Also talk about and practise:
- safe travel routes
- plans for when unexpected things happen
- what to do in wet weather.
Subsidised school travel
Transport for NSW provides subsidies to assist school students.
- The School Student Transport Scheme provides eligible students with free or subsidised travel on public transport between home and school.
- The School Drive Subsidy may help towards the costs of driving children to school if you live in an area where there is no public transport.
Bus Travel
All students in Infants are eligible for free bus travel to and from school. Primary students are eligible for free bus travel if the distance travelled to school is greater than 1.6km. School Opal Cards must be shown to the bus driver. Students are to TAP ON at the reader on the bus as they board and TAP OFF at the reader as they alight.
Parents/Caregivers can apply online at transportnsw.info/school-students and all enquiries are to go to Transport for NSW on 131500.
If a student’s School Opal Card is lost or stolen they are to ring Transport for NSW on 131500 and request a replacement. This can take up to two weeks - while waiting for the replacement card, the student should use a Child/Youth Opal Card or pay a fare.
When travelling on buses, students must observe the NSW Department of Transport Code of Conduct to protect their own safety, and the safety and comfort of other students. A copy of the Code of Conduct is available from the school office.
School Opal Cards may be withdrawn as a result of poor behaviour. The school appoints senior students as bus monitors. Their role is to assist the bus driver in keeping everyone safe. Monitors report any incidents of inappropriate behaviour to the Deputy Principals.
All bus enquiries should be directed to Premier Illawarra on 4271 1322.
The school student transport scheme provides subsidised travel on rail, bus, ferry and long distance coach services for eligible students.
Students with a disability may be eligible for the Assisted School Travel Program.
