2012 - A Piece of Straw
Dapto Public School awarded NATIONAL and STATE Champions J Rock 2012
Our production "A Piece of Straw" was inspired by the Japanese folk story as retold by children's author Junko Morimoto.
It was an inspiring tale of how a poor peasant is rewarded, through a series of events, for her selflessness so that she is able to house and feed the poor people of her village. It highlighted the important message that if you put kindness and generosity out into the world it comes back to you, sometimes when you least expect it.
Our production involved 116 students from our school from Years 3-6 (96 performers and 20 backstage crew), supported by a team of dedicated and talented teachers, parents and grandparents. All of the team, including the students, were involved in costume design and making, set design and construction, concept development and choreography. Our school motto isĀ "We Work As A Team" and that is exactly what we did to get our production ready for the stage.
At Dapto, we have a long-standing tradition of production excellence and throughout our history of performing we have done very well in both the Wakakirri National Story Festival and JRock (Junior Rock Eisteddfod).
This year we are very proud to say that we placed 1st at J Rock competitive STATE Final in Sydney at Sydney Entertainment Centre (the first time we have entered the Sydney competitive final), 1st Place in the NATIONAL Grand Final of J Rock 2012 competitive and 2nd in our Wakakirri National Story Festival FINAL. Three amazing achievements made even more special as we were able to achieve these amazing results after our previous production "True Inspiration" was made the National Winner of the Wakakirri National Story Festival in 2011. So, we are able to follow success with success.
We are so proud of our school and the amazing things that we can achieve with our dedicated, hardworking team.
